Working Waters:
Protecting and Restoring Coastal Habitats

The adoption of the Coastal Habitat Protection Plan by the Marine Fisheries, Coastal Resources and Environmental Management commissions was an important accomplishment. DENR has brought together agencies that review proposed projects and enforcement cases, develop indicators of habitat health and reporting on trends, work to restore oyster shell bottoms and educate the public about the importance of these habitats.

For complete background on the CHPP and further details regarding the habitats identified in the CHPP, go here.

The Coastal Habitat Protection Plan goals include:·

  • Improving the effectiveness of existing rules and programs protecting coastal fish habitats
  • Identifying, designating and protecting Strategic Habitat Areas
  • Enhancing and protecting habitats from physical impacts
  • Enhancing and protecting water quality
