The Sustainable Communities Task Force legislation identifies 11 metro regions of the state, which roughly mirror the regional planning groups as shown in this map. Many of the partnerships in the regional planning groups came together as part of the application process for the HUD Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant Program. The regional groups within North Carolina defined their regional planning areas in a way that is roughly similar to the metro regions, as shown here. For each region listed below, their regional plans are described in detail in the linked HUD grant applications. Contact information for groups below.
U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has selected two North Carolina organizations – the Land-of-Sky Regional Council in Asheville and the Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation in Greensboro – as recipients of $1.6 million each in grant awards to support more livable and sustainable communities. In an unprecedented collaboration between two federal agencies, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) jointly awarded nearly $68 million to help stimulate a new generation of sustainable and livable communities that connect housing, employment and economic development with transportation and other infrastructure improvements. The joint HUD-DOT funding will support 62 local and regional partnerships seeking to create a more holistic and integrated approach to connecting affordable housing, job opportunities and transportation corridors. Lexington and Asheville, North Carolina, were both awarded grants through this initiative. Press Release
